What is Mandatory Intervention?
- Mandatory Intervention is a new program at Meridian High School which is designed to help those students who are identified as being at risk of failing one or more classes during the school year. Students will be assigned (by teachers or administrators) to Mandatory Intervention for missing assignments and/or for a failing grade in one or more classes. Failure is not an option at MHS!
- Students who are assigned will continue to attend Mandatory Intervention until they have completed the requirements set by the assigning party. (i.e. Until the missing work has been completed, or until the grade has been raised.) This is as the name indicates, “mandatory”. Students who are assigned and do not attend, will be referred to their Assistant Principal for disciplinary consequences.
- Mandatory Intervention will be held in the South Cafeteria every morning from 7:30 – 7:55 am . School personnel will be present to help students with their work and will assist students with any questions the students may have regarding their academics. The Mandatory Intervention area is available for any and all students who wish to have a place to receive help on any academic work or a place to study before the school day starts.
Mandatory Intervention Logistics
- Teachers will assign students for one of two reasons:
- Two or more missing assignments
- Failing grade in the class
- Teacher Responsibilities for Mandatory Intervention
- Talk to student and document in their student planner the day they must start MI. Document the student contact in teacher log book.
- Go to the shared file and add the student name to the MI list
- Remove the student's name from the MI list immediately after the work is turned in
- Student Responsibilities for Mandatory Intervention
- Student attends (as many days as needed) and completes work and turns it in to the assigning teacher so that their name is removed from the list by the assigning teacher
- If student does not show up, his or her name will be given to the office for disciplinary action (Lunch Detention)
- If student shows up and is not doing work or is disruptive, his or her name will be given to the office for disciplinary action (Lunch Detention)
- If the student shows up and is doing work but not improving, the teacher should refer his or her name to the counselor or assistant principal for further assistance.
Teacher Tutoring – Thursday Mornings
Teachers will be available in their classrooms every Thursday morning from 7:15 until 7:55 for student tutoring. This time is meant for students to get direct instructional help from their teachers with the guarantee that teachers will be in their rooms.
However, students may talk with their teachers to schedule other times to meet with them for instructional help.
Teacher Tutoring – Teacher Responsibilities
- Invite students into your classroom for help with work on Thursday mornings.
- Encourage students to use their planner and initial their reminder to come in for help. (This will show other teachers that he or she is signed up to attend another teacher's tutoring)
- Teachers will stay in their room on Thursday mornings from 7:15 to 7:55 .
- Teachers will create an atmosphere encouragement and support for students.

Student Planners
- All teachers are encouraged to help students use their planners.
- Students and teachers should use the student planners to communicate assignments and due dates, days to show up for tutoring, when to start mandatory intervention and to communicate with parents.
- Planners must stay intact and students should not rip out pages and leave only the pass pages.
- Since the planners are student hall passes out of class, all students must have their own book and not a ripped out page to use as a hall pass.
- Student planners contain district policies and rules for students and teachers may refer to them at any time if a student is not following policy.
- If a student does not have their own planner, they should not be leaving the classroom. If a student does not have a planner (or their own planner) and wants to leave the classroom, a policy violation (lunch detention) can be issued by the teacher.
